The T-Shirt Factory

This has been a wonderful Math Unit for the students to learn more about place value and addition and subtraction strategies.

We started off the unit with a visit from Mrs. Wight.   She explained the history of selling the raiders T-shirts at our school and spoke about the responsibilities of collecting and counting the orders and the money.  Mrs. Wight challenged the 3rd graders to check her work on this years T-shirt orders, while also thinking about more effecient ways to get the final T-shrit total.

The students then took a field trip to JC Images to learn more about the process of printing the T-Shirts.  The students noticed that there is a great deal of math that goes into printing the T-shirts and organizing the orders.

After our field trip the students organized their own T-shirt factories coming up with company names and strategies for counting the raiders T-shirts.  The students worked over two weeks counting the orders and money.  The students shared their final results and collectively discussed the grand total.

On our final day of the project the students wrote letters to Mrs. Wight explaining their strategies for counting the T-shirt orders and what they learned from the experience.  Overall the students felt that Mrs. Wight has BIG job being in charge of the selling the Raiders T-shirts and agreed that every year the 3rd graders should partner up with her to check her work!

Jr Architects 2nd grade Guest speaker-Architect Mr. Collin

The 2nd grade Jr. Architects invited class parent Mr Collin in to talk with us about his work as an architect. Mr. Collin shared with the class different measurement tools he uses on the job and then had the chance to meet with students to comment on their dream clubhouse floor plans. Thank you mr Collin for inspiring our Jr Architects!

Jr Architects project 2nd grade

The 2nd graders have been hard at work designing their very own dream clubhouse. The students have been using what we had learned in our geometry unit to create floor plans while also learning about new measurement concepts including area and perimeter!
